Gyeongsangnam-do achieved the highest number of district selections nationwide in the national and regional strategic projects for greenbelt areas organized by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport on the 25th.

The Changwon Defense and Nuclear Fusion National Industrial Complex was found to have an abandoned mine within the project area, and after supplementing future project plans, it will undergo a re-examination by the Central Urban Planning Committee.
The selected projects are ▲Jinhae New Port Hinterland Complex ▲Changwon Urban Convergence Technology (R&D) Complex ▲Jinyeong Tech-Up General Industrial Complex ▲Urban Living Complex, consisting of three industrial complexes and one urban development project.

Gyeongsangnam-do explained, “With this selection, we have laid the foundation to develop 10.92 million square meters (approximately 3.3 million pyeong) within the greenbelt area and secured growth engines for Gyeongsangnam’s key industries such as logistics defense industry research centers and industrial complexes.”
The province plans to expand the developable land to include Seongnae, Namyang, and Wonpo districts, which were planned as the hinterland city of Jinhae New Port, creating a total area of 6.98 million square meters consisting of 2.98 million square meters of industrial facilities, 1 million square meters of residential facilities, 120,000 square meters of commercial facilities, and 2.88 million square meters of public and other facilities.
The Urban Convergence Technology (R&D) Complex will be established as an urban convergence research and development cluster hub on the Changwon National University campus in cooperation with the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute, Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials, Korea Institute of Materials Science, Korea Institute of Energy Technology, and Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering.
The complex will cover a total of 2.27 million square meters, including 500,000 square meters of industrial facilities such as research and development centers, 290,000 square meters of residential facilities, and 1.48 million square meters of public and other facilities.
The province expects this to activate regional strategic industry research and development through cooperation among industry, academia, research institutes, and government, increase global competitiveness, and expand good urban-type high-tech industry jobs by establishing a research and development innovation system centered on local universities.
The Jinyeong Tech-Up General Industrial Complex will be constructed on 700,000 square meters, including 450,000 square meters of industrial facilities and 250,000 square meters of public and other facilities, and is expected to generate an annual production value of 1.6 trillion KRW and create 2,300 jobs.
It plans to foster future mobility, hydrogen, robotics, and strategic semiconductor industries here to overcome the low-growth structure centered on small-scale manufacturing, advance the structure of local manufacturing, and establish a foundation for new growth industries.
The Changwon Urban Living Complex will integrate residential facilities including a foreigner support platform, education center, and public rental housing, and will be developed as a complex hinterland combining residential, commercial, and office facilities linked with the future-type transfer center development at Masan Station.
The complex will cover 970,000 square meters, including 260,000 square meters of mixed-use facilities and 710,000 square meters of public and other facilities, and Gyeongsangnam-do expects it to generate an annual production value of 600 billion KRW and create 1,234 jobs after completion.

The province plans to develop the four selected projects into a total area of 10.92 million square meters by 2045.
During the development phase, it expects direct investment of 3.4 trillion KRW, production inducement of 6.5 trillion KRW, employment inducement of 49,266 people, and after completion, an annual production value of 10.7 trillion KRW and job creation of 20,589 people.
Park Myung-gyun, Deputy Governor, said, “Until now, the central urban areas of Changwon and Gimhae were designated as greenbelt areas, resulting in an absolute shortage of developable land for fostering regional base industries. With the large-scale developable land secured through this selection, we will do our best to open a hopeful Gyeongsangnam-do by laying the foundation for sustainable growth.”
He added, “The re-examination decision for the Changwon 2nd National Industrial Complex means that it can be additionally selected after adjustments such as zone modifications. We will quickly supplement the project plan to ensure final selection.”
