KT-Ericsson Develops Next-Generation Communication Technology... Establishing 6G Foundation

KT is partnering with global telecommunications equipment manufacturer Ericsson to develop next-generation network technology. According to KT on the 25th, the two companies are collaborating on research for multi-radio multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) base stations for low-band frequency division duplex (FDD) frequencies, laying the foundation to provide a stable 6G network.

The technology jointly researched this time focuses on increasing data transmission speeds by utilizing more antenna ports than existing LTE base stations. In particular, for 5.5G and future 6G networks, low-band frequencies that provide stable coverage along with mid-band frequencies for ultra-high-speed services are important, and this technology can enhance the coverage and capacity of low-band frequencies.

Key features include simultaneous support for 1.8G and 2.1G dual bands from a single antenna, coverage expansion through beamforming and inter-cell interference control technologies, and improved transmission speeds via multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) functionality.

KT plans to showcase this technology together with Ericsson at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025, held in Barcelona, Spain, on the 3rd of next month. Additionally, the two companies will continue research on low-band frequency optimization technologies such as multi-radio frequency sharing and strengthen cooperation on 6G standardization.
