The stock price of MOT, a secondary battery assembly equipment company, is showing strong performance. This is attributed to the growing adoption of 4680 cylindrical batteries in the automotive industry, including Tesla, raising expectations that MOT, the exclusive supplier to Samsung SDI, could see expanded sales.
As of 1:51 PM on the 24th, MOT's stock price recorded 7,410 KRW, up 15.96% compared to the previous trading day.
The news that the adoption of 4680 cylindrical batteries is increasing in the automotive industry, potentially leading to related sales growth, appears to have acted as a positive factor. Starting with BMW this year, GM, Stellantis, and Volvo are also discussing the installation of 4680 batteries. If production standardization is achieved, it is expected to become the new industry standard and serve as a new growth engine.
Cylindrical batteries are produced by rolling cathode materials, anode materials, and separators and placing them into a cylindrical can. Compared to existing prismatic and pouch types, they have faster production speeds and lower costs. Tesla has already determined that 46mm is the most appropriate size considering vehicle driving range and cost, and is establishing standards accordingly. According to major foreign media, Tesla currently produces batteries for 24,000 Cybertrucks annually. Each Cybertruck contains 1,360 4680 battery cells.
Battery manufacturers are also preparing. LG Energy Solution has established cylindrical battery production lines in Cheongju Ochang, and Samsung SDI has set up production lines in Cheonan and Malaysia. MOT, as Samsung SDI's exclusive supplier, is developing test lines for next-generation battery assembly equipment such as all-solid-state batteries and 46-pi cylindrical batteries, and is working to expand its portfolio.
