The police arrested 836 people and detained 196 of them during a special crackdown on drugs in clubs last year.
According to the National Police Agency on the 24th, a total of 13,512 drug offenders were caught last year, with 836 (6.2%) apprehended through special crackdowns in entertainment districts such as clubs. This is the highest number of drug offenders caught in entertainment areas by year.
Three outstanding performers in the special crackdown were promoted by one rank. Sergeant Kim Ji-hoon of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's Drug Investigation Unit and Sergeant Park Seong-bong of the Busan Police Agency's Criminal Mobile Unit each arrested 45 and 75 people respectively with their teams during the special crackdown period from September to December last year, earning promotion to Inspector. Officer Lee Jae-yong of the Gyeonggi Northern Police Agency's Criminal Mobile Unit arrested 27 drug offenders and seized 1.2 kg of synthetic marijuana and 50 million won in cash, resulting in his promotion to Senior Inspector.
Acting Commissioner General Lee Ho-young of the National Police Agency said, "The decline in the spread of drugs around clubs is thanks to the efforts of those promoted and their colleagues," adding, "We will strictly crack down on drug crimes."
