Exhibition "Director's Inspiration: Bong Joon-ho"
The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in the United States is hosting an exhibition highlighting director Bong Joon-ho's filmmaking process. According to the Academy Museum on the 23rd (local time), the exhibition "Director's Inspiration: Bong Joon-ho" will run from next month 23rd until January 10, 2027. It will showcase over 100 items including previously unreleased archival materials of Director Bong, personal collections, storyboards, movie posters, concept art, models, props, and on-set photographs.
Director's Inspiration is an exhibition series that selects one film director and focuses intensively on their body of work. It highlights the filmmaking process, past works, and the impact on the film industry by displaying related items.
The museum introduced Bong’s films as addressing transnational and universal issues such as class disparity, social injustice, environmental crises, and political and moral corruption, whether set in 1980s Korea or imagined futures. Regarding his body of work, they explained that it "rejects simple categorization and blends social critique into highly entertaining, unexpected, and thought-provoking stories."
The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, operated by the Academy Foundation which organizes the Academy Awards, opened in 2021 in Los Angeles (LA) and is the largest film museum in the United States. It exhibits film-related heritage and carefully selects notable films for screening. This is the first time the museum is focusing intensively on the works of a Korean director.
