SK On to Unveil Cylindrical Battery for the First Time at 'InterBattery 2025'

All Pouch, Prismatic, and Cylindrical Types Unveiled
High-Voltage Mid-Nickel Battery on Display
"You Will See the Diversification Strategy"

SK On will unveil various form factors and chemistries that meet the demands of the global electric vehicle market.

SK On announced on the 23rd that it will participate in 'Interbattery 2025,' the largest battery exhibition in Korea, held from March 5 to 7 at COEX in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, under the theme "Dream Onward to the Future," showcasing products and technologies that will lead battery trends.

At this exhibition, SK On will display all three major form factors: pouch-type, prismatic, and cylindrical batteries. The physical model of the cylindrical battery will be unveiled for the first time. SK On completed a cylindrical pilot line in the second half of last year and has begun development. In addition to the bidirectional prismatic battery, a unidirectional model will also be exhibited. The "Z folding stacking" technology and fast-charging solutions applied to the prismatic battery will also be introduced. Z folding stacking is a process in which the separator is not cut during the stacking of battery materials but separates the cathode and anode in the shape of the letter "Z."

SK On will also showcase products with diversified chemistries, meaning various cathode and anode materials. SK On stated that it will unveil its high-voltage mid-nickel battery for the first time, claiming it combines price competitiveness, performance, lifespan, and safety. The mid-nickel battery refers to batteries with nickel content between 50% and 70% in the NCM (nickel-cobalt-manganese) cathode material. SK On explained that its high-voltage mid-nickel battery lowers the content of expensive nickel and cobalt to secure price competitiveness while utilizing high voltage to improve energy density.

Latest technologies related to battery safety will also be revealed. SK On will introduce a wireless BMS (Battery Management System) that requires no wiring at this exhibition. The system structure involves a wireless chip attached to the battery cell tab collecting information, which is wirelessly transmitted to the BMS via a module antenna.

Visitors will also be able to see the immersion cooling technology developed in collaboration with SK Enmove. Unlike the conventional method that cools only the bottom of the battery cell, immersion cooling technology directly submerges the entire battery cell in a special cooling fluid to effectively dissipate heat.

An SK On official said, "You will be able to see SK On’s battery form factor and chemistry diversification strategy and innovative technologies aligned with the changing trends of the global electric vehicle market. SK On will continuously strengthen its research and development capabilities and build a portfolio that meets customer demands to secure differentiated competitive advantages."
