Suspicion of Ballot Photo Incident... Gwangju Nam-gu Council Members 'Cleared of Charges'

Suspicion of Ballot Photo Incident... Gwangju Nam-gu Council Members 'Cleared of Charges' Front view of Gwangju Nambu Police Station.

The members of the Gwangju Nam-gu Council, who were suspected of taking photos of ballots during the election of standing committee chairpersons in the latter half of the council term, have been cleared of charges.

The Gwangju Nambu Police Station announced on the 21st that it had decided not to refer the case of the four Nam-gu council members, who were accused of interfering with official duties, as it found no charges.

The police, who had been investigating the case for about seven months since July last year, questioned the four council members but found no circumstances or evidence to suggest that they had taken photos of the ballots, leading to this decision.

During the election of standing committee chairpersons at the Nam-gu Council last year, the four council members were investigated after a colleague filed a complaint alleging they had taken photos of the ballots.

One of the accused council members stated at the time, "I did not take any photos," and added, "I will take legal action against the false expression of suspicion as if it were fact."

The police concluded that even if the ballots had actually been photographed, it would not constitute a violation of the law, and there was no evidence of collusion to elect a specific member as standing committee chairperson.
