First-Come, First-Served Until Project Funds Run Out
All-Out Efforts to Reduce Abandoned Dogs
Jeongeup City in North Jeolla Province announced on the 21st that it will implement a support project for pet registration fees to increase the pet registration rate and reduce the occurrence of abandoned dogs.
This project, which has been implemented annually since 2023, fully subsidizes the cost so that dog owners can register their pets with an embedded microchip at no charge.

Any dog owner residing in Jeongeup City is eligible to apply.
The registration fee is approximately 30,000 KRW per dog, and there is no limit to the number of dogs that can be registered for free. Owners can visit a participating animal hospital with their pets for immediate registration, and support will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis until this year's quota is exhausted.
In particular, for large dogs kept in yards (yard dogs), considering the difficulty of visiting animal hospitals, a "visiting animal registration service" will also be operated. If there are five or more dogs eligible for registration in a village, owners can apply at the local administrative welfare center, and a veterinarian from an animal hospital will visit the village to carry out the registration.
The city emphasized to citizens raising dogs that pet registration is a legal obligation, and that a fine of 200,000 KRW will be imposed if dogs aged two months or older are not registered. The city also highlighted that registration can help prevent the loss or abandonment of pets in advance.
A city official stated, "Animal registration is the first step toward fostering a responsible pet culture," and added, "We hope that this project will help stabilize the registration system and minimize the occurrence of lost or abandoned animals."
