Japan January Consumer Prices Up 3.2%... Highest in 19 Months

Japan's consumer price index (excluding fresh food) rose 3.2% in January compared to the same month last year, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications announced on the 21st.


This marks the largest increase in one year and seven months since June 2023.

Although there was a significant rise of 3.0% in December last year, the rate of increase has further expanded.


It also exceeded the median market forecast of 3.1% announced by Quick, a financial information company affiliated with Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Nikkei).


The overall consumer price index including fresh food rose 4.0%. According to Kyodo News, a 4% increase rate is the first since January 2023.


In particular, rice, which has shown an unusual price increase since last year, rose 70.9% compared to one year ago.
