The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews (R&A) has appointed actor Song Joong-ki as a global ambassador.
On the 20th (local time), R&A announced that Song Joong-ki will take on roles such as engaging in various social contribution activities through golf, supporting underprivileged groups, and encouraging promising golf talents to challenge bigger stages. R&A is an international golf organization widely known for establishing golf rules worldwide except for the Americas and hosting The Open, the oldest major golf tournament in the world.
Phil Anderson, Chief Development Officer of R&A, said, "Korea is one of the largest golf markets in the world. Golf participation is rapidly increasing globally." He added, "Song Joong-ki is one of the 8.7 million adult Korean golfers who love golf, and through his appointment as an ambassador, we hope to raise awareness of the benefits of golf and inspire those who are new to the sport."
Song Joong-ki said, "Golf is a sport enjoyed by people of all ages and genders. I was deeply impressed by R&A's vision and values," adding, "I am honored to help more people experience golf and its benefits." He will attend the business forum of the LPGA Tour HSBC Women's World Championship, held in Singapore from the 27th, as an R&A ambassador.
Alongside Song Joong-ki, R&A appointed former LPGA Tour player Michelle Wie West (USA), football player Gareth Bale (Wales), actress Katherine Newton (USA), and musician Niall Horan (Ireland) as global ambassadors.
