The prosecution has appealed the not-guilty verdict for Lee Sangik, the former governor of Hampyeong County, Jeonnam, who was indicted on bribery charges.
According to the legal community on the 20th, the prosecution submitted an appeal the previous day, stating that "it is unjust that the first trial court rendered a not-guilty verdict due to a misjudgment of facts and a misunderstanding of the law."
Governor Lee was indicted without detention in 2020 on charges of bribery for allegedly receiving a suit worth 8.88 million won as a favor in connection with a private contract for a local government construction project.
However, the first trial court ruled not guilty, stating, "It is difficult to conclude that Governor Lee was aware that the construction contractor paid for the suit."
The prosecution plans to overturn the not-guilty verdict in the appellate trial by proving that Governor Lee was aware of the suit payment on his behalf.
