Improving Safety and Working Conditions for Sanitation Workers

Seo-gu District of Gwangju City announced on the 19th that it will introduce the 'small and medium-sized Korean-style garbage truck,' which has been jointly researched and developed with the Ministry of Environment, Korea Transportation Safety Authority, Sehwa Motor, and AM Special Vehicle Co., Ltd.

This newly introduced garbage truck is the first among local governments nationwide to improve the safety and working environment of sanitation workers, while also increasing collection efficiency.

The new garbage truck can access narrow roads and alleys where large trucks could not enter before, thus enhancing collection efficiency. It also features a dedicated boarding space that makes getting on and off easier, improving upon the previous truck design where sanitation workers had to hang onto the back of the vehicle while moving.

The garbage truck, which will be operated starting this month, is equipped with cameras and monitors for the safety of sanitation workers, dual-hand operation switches, and various convenience features such as a refrigerator and heater, charger, and ceiling-mounted air conditioner and heater.

Seo-gu expects that with the introduction of the new garbage truck, the working environment will be greatly improved, reducing the risk of musculoskeletal injuries for sanitation workers and preventing various accidents in advance.

Initially, one vehicle will be introduced and operated mainly in Hwajeong 2-3-dong and Pungam 2 District, with plans to expand the number of vehicles in the future.
