20 High-Pedestrian and Jaywalking-Prone Areas Selected
Low-Profile Design Ensures No Obstruction to Drivers' View
Contributes to Protective Barriers, Daebo City Initiative, and Advertising Effectiveness
Gwangju City will introduce the nation’s first ‘pedestrian safety banner stands’.
According to Gwangju City on the 19th, low-profile pedestrian safety banner stands that also serve as protective barriers will be installed as a priority at intersections with high pedestrian traffic and areas prone to jaywalking to ensure citizen safety.
As of last year, there were 1,127 pedestrian safety accidents (including 21 fatalities) around intersections in Gwangju caused by jaywalking. With the goal of reducing pedestrian accidents at intersections, the city, in cooperation with the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency and five autonomous districts, has selected 59 high-traffic intersections with heavy pedestrian flow as target sites, ensuring that the installations do not obstruct drivers’ views.
The city plans to initially invest 81 million KRW to install approximately 20 pedestrian safety banner stands as a pilot project and will expand the initiative through ongoing efforts.
Through the installation of pedestrian safety banner stands, the city expects not only to prevent safety accidents but also to contribute to realizing a ‘Daebo’ (public transportation, bicycle, and pedestrian-oriented) city. Additionally, the stands will help create a cleaner streetscape and enhance advertising effectiveness in densely populated areas, thereby supporting the revitalization of the local economy.
Park Geumhwa, head of the Architectural Landscape Division, said, “Gwangju City, in cooperation with the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency and the autonomous districts, will be the first in the country to install pedestrian safety banner stands. We expect this initiative to contribute to improving pedestrian safety, realizing a Daebo city, creating a cleaner street environment by eradicating illegal banners, and maximizing promotional opportunities for small business owners.”
