"Citizens' Coalition for a Society without Academic Elitism"
Calls for Special Audit and Improvement Measures
A private high school in Gwangju has come under criticism for assigning excessive duties to contract teachers, such as homeroom teacher positions.
The civic group "Citizens' Coalition for a Society without Academic Elitism" stated on the 18th, "It has been confirmed that Gwangju S Private High School assigned contract teachers to 11 out of 12 third-year classes, placing an excessive workload on contract teachers."
The group added, "According to the current homeroom teacher assignments at S High School, contract teachers are concentrated in the third year (11 out of 12 classes), compared to the first year (3 out of 10 classes) and the second year (8 out of 11 classes)."
The organization pointed out, "Homeroom teachers for third-year students are responsible for student guidance, preparing school records, and providing career and college counseling. Since contract teachers have no job security after their contracts expire, there is a lack of continuity in their work, and it is difficult to hold them fully accountable for their duties. This poses a significant risk of harm to students."
The group also raised concerns about the fairness of the homeroom teacher assignment process at S High School. They said, "While the recruitment process for contract teachers was still ongoing, the school released the 2025 work assignment chart, which already designated some applicants as homeroom teachers. If a specific person was predetermined and the recruitment process was only a formality, this is clearly a case of hiring corruption."
The organization called on the city education office, stating, "According to the guidelines for the management of contract teachers, principals must not assign unreasonable duties to contract teachers compared to regular teachers, and must not assign them tasks that require excessive responsibility." They demanded a special audit of the school and the implementation of improvement measures.
Meanwhile, the school foundation operating S High School was subject to the dispatch of an interim director after the Ministry of Education canceled the approval of the existing board members last year, following 34 violations including unfair hiring of children and improper receipt of retirement allowances.
