Egg Prices Become a Major Issue...
White House Rushes to Respond
Egg prices in the United States have surged 15% in a month due to avian influenza. The White House, while responding to avian influenza, blamed the previous Joe Biden administration for the rise in egg prices.
Kevin Hassett, Chairman of the White House National Economic Council (NEC), stated on the 16th (local time) on CBS's "Face the Nation" that Agriculture Secretary Brook Rollins plans to submit an avian influenza response plan to President Trump next week. Hassett mentioned that the government’s top scientists, as well as experts from the U.S. and around the world, are collaborating to address avian influenza.
A notice stating that eggs are sold out is posted at a Costco store in Los Angeles, California, USA.
According to CBS, since the outbreak of avian influenza in the U.S. in 2022, 148 million poultry including chickens and ducks have been culled. The U.S. Department of Agriculture reported that 13.2 million laying hens were culled in December last year alone, and the spread continued into January this year. In addition to the price surge, some regions in the U.S. are experiencing egg shortages in grocery stores.
Hassett directed criticism of the rising prices of eggs and other grocery items at the Biden administration. He said, "We have realized that the stagflation caused by former President Biden’s policies is much more severe than we initially thought," adding, "Over the past three months, the average inflation rate for all goods, including eggs, was 4.6%, far exceeding the target, and it accelerated toward the end of former President Biden’s term."
In particular, Hassett claimed, "Former President Biden had no plan for avian influenza," and "His plan was to cull chickens, randomly slaughtering birds around the points where sick chickens were found, spending billions of dollars."
Hassett said, "What we need to do is find better methods to avoid culling chickens through biosecurity measures and medications." He also added, "These measures should have been implemented a year ago during the Biden administration. If that had happened, egg prices would be much better now."
