Wando-gun Successfully Concludes 'Seaweed Blue Carbon Industrialization Forum'

Discussion on International Certification Strategies and Development Plans for the Marine Bio Industry

Wando County in Jeonnam recently announced on the 17th that it successfully hosted the forum "Blue Carbon: The Future of the Ocean Opened by Seaweed" at the National Assembly Members' Office Building.

The forum, hosted by Democratic Party lawmaker Park Ji-won and jointly organized by Wando County and the Korea Marine Bio Association, was attended by over 100 participants from academia, industry, and government. The event was prepared to re-examine the blue carbon value of seaweed and to explore strategies for international certification.

In his opening remarks, Representative Park emphasized, "If seaweed receives international certification as blue carbon through the efforts of the National Assembly, the government, and local communities, it will become a major turning point in economic fields such as carbon emissions trading and the marine bio industry."

County Governor Shin Woo-chul stated, "Wando is a treasure trove of blue carbon, and we are focusing on strengthening the competitiveness of the seaweed industry by pursuing certification efforts, establishing facilities for certified seaweed active materials production, and building a seaweed bio smart factory."

The forum featured presentations on topics such as: ▲Seaweed blue carbon certification strategies and ripple effects (Professor Kim Juhyung, Kunsan National University) ▲Geopolitical excellence of Wando’s seaweed aquaculture (Professor Kim Taehun, Chonnam National University) ▲Activation strategies for offshore large-scale seaweed aquaculture (Chief Researcher Choi Youngwoong, KIOST) ▲Prospects and development strategies for the marine bio industry utilizing seaweed (Professor Hwang Dongsoo, POSTECH).

Professor Kim Taehun explained, citing the case where NASA released satellite images of Wando's seaweed farms, "Wando is the nation’s largest seaweed production area and is attracting international attention for its eco-friendly aquaculture."

Chief Researcher Choi Youngwoong presented strategies for activating offshore seaweed aquaculture combined with offshore wind power, while Professor Hwang Dongsoo emphasized, "Seaweed is a high value-added resource that can be utilized in various industries beyond food, including pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and bioplastics."

Meanwhile, last November, the county visited the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the Department of Energy to promote the excellence of Wando seaweed and discuss blue carbon certification and marine bio industry cooperation. In addition, the county has been continuously proposing to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries the enactment of ordinances to promote the management and utilization of coastal carbon sinks, the establishment of the Blue Carbon Demonstration Research Center’s Namhae branch, and the construction of a climate change response center for marine and fisheries.
