An illegal foreign resident who tried to evade a DUI checkpoint, crashed into a building, and fled the scene has been arrested.

According to the Gwangju Bukbu Police Station, a Kazakhstani driver, identified as A, was arrested on the 17th on charges of causing injury while fleeing the scene after evading a DUI checkpoint (in violation of the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes).

A is accused of crashing into a PC cafe building and injuring a person while fleeing in Yongbong-dong, Buk-gu, Gwangju, at around 11:07 p.m. on the 10th, then fleeing the scene.

As a result of the accident, a man in his 50s sustained minor injuries and was transported to a hospital.

The passenger, identified as B, was apprehended by police, while A went into hiding and was arrested in Yesan, South Chungcheong Province, about 14 hours later after a police pursuit.

It was revealed that both individuals were illegal residents from Kazakhstan.

Police investigations found that A fled the scene after seeing the DUI checkpoint, fearing that his illegal status would be discovered, and subsequently committed the crime.

The police are investigating the circumstances of the incident and will determine how to proceed with A's case.
