Guri City, Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Baek Kyung-hyun) announced on the 17th that the vehicle license plate sealing system will be abolished starting from the 21st, following partial amendments to related laws such as the Automobile Management Act and the Automobile Registration Decree.
Introduced in 1962, the license plate sealing system was implemented to prevent theft and forgery of vehicle license plates. However, with the advancement of information and communication technology enabling real-time vehicle verification, and to eliminate unnecessary social costs such as issuance and reissuance fees for seals, the system has been decided to be abolished.
The nuts used to secure the license plate can be fastened with waterproof materials such as stainless steel general nuts or closed nuts, and there are no restrictions on the license plate fixing method. However, the obligation to attach seals remains until the 20th, before the enforcement of the new regulation, so caution is required.
Mayor Baek Kyung-hyun of Guri City stated, “The abolition of the sealing system is significant in resolving citizens’ inconveniences and simplifying the vehicle registration process.”
For any questions regarding the system change, please contact the Vehicle Management Division of Guri City Hall.
