8,074 Pairs of Anti-Entanglement Gloves
to Be Distributed to School Cafeterias
in the First Half of the Year
Gyeongbuk Office of Education (Superintendent Lim Jong-sik) announced on the 17th that it plans to distribute the ‘Anti-Entanglement Gloves,’ developed for the first time nationwide to prevent entrapment and cutting accidents occurring in school cafeterias, to all cafeterias in the province by the first half of this year.
Recently, accidents have been increasing in cafeterias while handling rotating machines such as vegetable grinders, vegetable cutters, and food waste processors. In particular, there have been reports of serious injuries caused by hands getting caught in machines while wearing rubber gloves.
Cutting accidents not only require a lot of time and cost for rehabilitation and treatment but can also cause mental and emotional damage due to loss of function and deformity. However, there have been difficulties in using appropriate protective gear because the safety and hygiene regulations of the ‘Industrial Safety and Health Act’ and the ‘School Meal Hygiene Management Guidelines’ conflict with each other.
To solve these on-site problems, the Gyeongbuk Office of Education started the ‘Development of Anti-Entanglement Gloves for School Cafeterias’ in July last year, the first of its kind nationwide, and recently completed the development of the ‘Anti-Entanglement Gloves’ as appropriate safety protective gear.
The developed gloves are designed with a dual structure of an ‘inner glove’ and an ‘outer glove’ to prevent entrapment and cutting accidents. The inner glove is designed so that the finger amputation part instantly separates in case of entrapment during rotating machine operation, preventing the hand from being pulled further into the machine. The outer glove is made of silicone material to prevent adhesion caused by sweat and moisture and is structured to quickly protect the hand by preventing it from being caught in the machine in case of an accident.
The Gyeongbuk Office of Education plans to distribute a total of 8,074 pairs of ‘Anti-Entanglement Gloves’ to 754 cooking teachers (institutions) in the province by the first half of this year. Through this, it is expected to protect the lives of cafeteria workers, raise safety awareness, and establish an innovative safety culture in school cafeterias.
Lim Jong-sik, Superintendent of Gyeongbuk Office of Education, said, “The Anti-Entanglement Gloves are an innovative tool that protects the lives of cafeteria workers beyond simple protective gear,” and added, “We will take the lead in creating a safe school environment by establishing this as a model case for education offices nationwide.”
