Expansion to 50 North American Cities Within the Next Five Years
Karrot, the global service of Danggeun, is gaining popularity in Canada, signaling a green light for its North American market expansion.
On the 17th, Danggeun announced that its global service, Karrot, has surpassed 2 million cumulative subscribers in Canada. Since the early stages of its domestic business, Danggeun has aimed to target overseas markets, and its global business is accelerating growth by achieving meaningful results centered on Canada, the North American hub.
Karrot Canada, which started services in major hub cities such as Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, and Edmonton, reached 1 million subscribers by the end of May last year, two years after its full-scale local expansion. After expanding its service coverage to the entire country except for the French-speaking Quebec and strengthening local strategies, it secured 2 million subscribers about eight months after surpassing 1 million subscribers.
Danggeun explained that the main factor behind Karrot’s growth is fostering a trustworthy secondhand trading culture through connections between neighbors. Karrot, similar to Danggeun’s early days in Korea, focuses on the concept of ‘neighborhood’ and provides a hyperlocal secondhand trading service based on GPS authentication. Connecting neighbors through technology to build mutual trust appears to have earned particularly high satisfaction from local users.
User-friendly operational policies also draw attention. Reflecting the local users’ different concept of neighborhood compared to Korea, Karrot Canada has adjusted the transaction radius to be wider and introduced the Karrot Score, a point system replacing the Manner Temperature for users unfamiliar with body temperature measurement.
A Danggeun official said, “The recent achievement of Karrot Canada is the result of Danggeun’s continuous investment and efforts targeting the global market,” adding, “Based on the experience and achievements accumulated in Canada, we will do our best to become a global company that can exert greater influence across the North American market.”
Currently, Danggeun provides Karrot services in over 1,400 areas across four countries, including the UK, Canada, the US, and some cities in Japan. To accelerate service localization, in 2022, co-founder Yonghyun Kim moved to Canada and is overseeing North American operations alongside Robert Kim, CEO of the Canadian corporation. Last year, another co-founder, Jaehyun Kim, was appointed CEO of the Japanese corporation to lead the Japan business. Based on more active investments, Danggeun plans to expand Karrot’s service areas to 50 cities in the North American region within the next five years.
