On the 16th at the National Gugak Center's Yeaakdang
Binareum Gugak Orchestra will hold its 7th regular concert "Revival (蘇生), Sprouting" on the 16th at the National Gugak Center's Yeaakdang.
The concert will feature pieces that tell the story of enduring the harsh winter of hardship and adversity and welcoming a new spring.
The first piece is the gugak orchestra composition "Geumjandi" (composed by Kim Daesung), which contains the deep roots and melodies of our nation's history. This will be followed by the yanggeum concerto "Yanggeum Sinawi" (composed by Yoon Eunhwa), which borrows the traditional music Sinawi form and adds fun with various jangdan rhythms; the gugak orchestra piece "Minyo Osaek Taryeong" (composed by Park Hangyu), which expresses the diverse colors of our folk songs including representative seasonal songs such as Dohwatalyeong (spring), Nongbuga (summer), Pungnyeonga (autumn), Gunbamtaryeong (winter), and Arirang; and "Poem of Wind, Tree, and Earth" for sori and orchestra (arranged by Lee Jungmyeon), based on Cheolmuri Gut, a type of ritual performed in the Hwanghae-do region in spring or autumn to pray for blessings.
The final piece is the symphonic poem for gugak orchestra accompanied by Korean dance, "Chunhyang" (composed by Lim Gyomin). "Chunhyang" is composed in the form of a symphonic poem following the story of the pansori Chunhyangga: the meeting at Gwanghallu Pavilion, love at first sight, deeper love and sudden separation, Chunhyang's hardships caused by Byeon Hakdo and the official's inspection, and finally the happiness of the two lovers.
Ha Taeguk, the conductor of Binareum Gugak Orchestra, stated, "This performance by Binareum Gugak Orchestra, which embodies the steadfast and strong will, humor, hope, and prayers for blessings of our people throughout history, as well as love achieved by overcoming hardships, will bloom a spring of hope and emotion in everyone's hearts like sprouting new buds."
Binareum Gugak Orchestra is a community gugak orchestra composed purely of amateurs who did not major in gugak, founded in 2018. Since its inaugural concert in 2018, it has held regular concerts every year except during the COVID-19 pandemic period, and since 2023, it has been holding regular concerts at the National Gugak Center's Yeaakdang. In addition, it actively conducts small-scale visiting performances at nursing hospitals, kindergartens, international conference receptions, and local medical association commemorative events, striving to promote the enjoyment and popularization of gugak.
