Statement Issued...
"Work Functions and Quality of Life Will Worsen"
Gwangju Environmental Movement Union
Gwangju environmental groups have voiced opposition to an ordinance that would raise the floor area ratio for mixed-use residential buildings in the central commercial district, arguing that it would worsen both work functions and residential quality.
On the 12th, the Gwangju Environmental Movement Union issued a statement saying, "We oppose the amendment to the urban planning ordinance that would allow for taller and more numerous apartment buildings in the central commercial district."
The group stated, "Many commercial areas are not suitable for residential environments," adding, "Residents living in apartments built in the middle of motel districts, elementary schools that can only be reached by passing through entertainment and nightlife facilities, and daily amenities located outside walking distance are experiencing inconvenience."
They further pointed out, "Although it is argued that this ordinance revision could reduce urban hollowing, long-term unsold commercial units, and vacancies, simply turning all spaces for eating, playing, resting, and working into apartments will not solve the problems of urban hollowing and unsold commercial properties."
They also emphasized, "If high-density residential complexes are built due to increased floor area ratios, there could be a shortage of essential infrastructure such as schools and roads. The lack of urban infrastructure necessary for the environment will lead to a decline in residents' quality of life."
Additionally, they stated, "Amending the urban planning ordinance requires thorough deliberation and multifaceted review above all," and added, "The city of Gwangju should be managed so that urban spaces can function for residential, commercial, and industrial purposes both now and in the future."
