The Dosan Ahn Changho-class submarine is the first 3,000-ton class submarine independently designed with domestic technology. Unlike previous submarines built based on foreign technology, it is significant that domestic institutions such as the Defense Acquisition Program Administration, the Navy, the Agency for Defense Development, and the Defense Technology Quality Institute participated in the design.

In particular, it is evaluated as a technological leap in submarine construction by not only designing but also successfully domesticating core equipment. The Dosan Ahn Changho-class submarine is equipped with submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBM). Currently, South Korea is constructing a new model with improved performance compared to the ‘Dosan Ahn Changho-class submarine’.

Previously, South Korea cooperated with Germany to deploy the ‘Jang Bogo-class (KSS-Ⅰ)’ in the Korean Peninsula waters for the first time in 1992, laying the foundation for independently building submarines with domestic technology.

In 2011, South Korea delivered a domestically developed submarine overseas (Indonesia) for the first time, joining the ranks of submarine-exporting countries (the fifth in the world).

Afterwards, through the ‘Son Won-il-class (KSS-Ⅱ)’, and by deploying the ‘Dosan Ahn Changho’ designed and built with domestic independent technology in August 2021, South Korea has proudly demonstrated its status as a submarine powerhouse.

The Korean-style submarine is significant as a core element not only for weapons system research and development but also for strengthening national maritime security and enhancing defense capabilities.

The commemorative stamps can be purchased by visiting a nearby main post office or through the internet post office.

Jo Hae-geun, head of Korea Post, said, “The Korean-style submarine commemorative stamp is issued to celebrate the advancement of Korea’s defense and maritime technology,” and added, “We hope the public will have an opportunity to reflect on national security and the pride of the Navy through the stamps.”
