Jeollanam-do Responds to Rising Norovirus and Rotavirus Cases
Hygiene Management Essential for Children Aged 1 to 6
As Norovirus and other viruses have recently spread nationwide, Jeonnam Province has requested enhanced hygiene measures, focusing on daycare centers and similar facilities. Provided by Jeonnam Province
Jeollanam-do has begun to strictly guide and manage personal hygiene practices such as hand washing at daycare centers and other facilities, as the number of Norovirus and Rotavirus infection cases is increasing nationwide.
Norovirus and Rotavirus are transmitted through spaces or restrooms used by infected individuals, contaminated secretions (such as feces or vomit), and objects. Main symptoms include vomiting, fever, and diarrhea within 24 to 72 hours. Norovirus, in particular, is highly contagious, occurs mainly from late fall to early spring (November to March), and primarily affects infants and young children (ages 0 to 6).
According to sample surveillance of acute intestinal infectious diseases at six hospitals in the Jeonnam region, the number of Norovirus infection cases was highest in the second week of January, with five cases: two children aged 1 to 6, and one each in the age groups 13 to 18, 50 to 64, and 65 and older. For Rotavirus infection, three cases occurred in those aged 50 and older in November last year, and one case was reported in the 1 to 6 age group in the fourth week of this year.
To prevent Rotavirus infection, free national vaccinations are provided for infants (2 to 6 months old). Vaccination clinics can be checked on the Immunization Helper website.
Prevention guidelines for acute intestinal infectious diseases include: ▲Washing hands for at least 30 seconds ▲Eating food cooked at 85 degrees Celsius or higher for at least one minute ▲Closing the toilet lid before flushing after defecation ▲Disinfecting spaces or restrooms used by patients ▲Wearing a mask (KF94) and gloves when removing patient secretions.
Last year, Jeollanam-do operated various programs for 2,000 people at 66 daycare centers, including proper hand washing and view box experiences. A survey on these programs showed a high satisfaction rate of 98%.
