The "Gwangju Export Industry Competitiveness Enhancement Support Group" has been officially launched to efficiently respond to the "global tariff war" triggered by US President Trump.
On the 12th, Gwangju City announced that it held a meeting of the "Export Industry Competitiveness Enhancement Support Group" (hereinafter referred to as the Support Group) on the 11th in the city hall's small conference room, presided over by Vice Mayor for Culture and Economy Lee Sanggap.
The Support Group is led by the Vice Mayor for Culture and Economy and was formed by bringing together local export support organizations to provide proactive response and comprehensive management of the entire export industry. The Support Group consists of two dedicated teams: the Export Infrastructure Enhancement Task Force and the Export Competitiveness Enhancement Task Force. These teams gather opinions from companies in five export industry sectors?home appliances, mobility, medical healthcare, optical convergence, and others?to develop tailored support measures.
Earlier, on the 4th, Mayor Kang Gijung urgently directed that the previously operated "Home Appliance Industry Competitiveness Enhancement Support Group" be expanded to the "Export Industry Competitiveness Enhancement Support Group." Accordingly, the Support Group is establishing a proactive response and comprehensive management system for the global tariff war not only in the home appliance industry but also across the entire export industry, including the automotive sector.
During the meeting, participants shared the foreign policy stance of the Trump administration's second term and the results of industry-specific corporate surveys, based on discussions from an emergency meeting held on the 5th. They also focused on practical support measures, including ways to strengthen the overall competitiveness of the export industry and R&D for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
Attendees engaged in in-depth discussions on actively supporting R&D projects directly pursued by SMEs and strengthening the competitiveness of SMEs that have strong products but weak brand power.
Vice Mayor for Culture and Economy Lee Sanggap stated, "With the Trump administration's second term intensifying trade pressure, local export SMEs are facing increasing difficulties. Gwangju City and related organizations will actively cooperate to review the overall support status for the export industry and meticulously check for any shortcomings by meeting with local companies."
Meanwhile, representatives from 13 related organizations attended the meeting, including the Gwangju-Jeonnam Regional Office of SMEs and Startups, Gwangju Technopark, Gwangju Future Mobility Promotion Institute, Gwangju Institute, Gwangju Economic Promotion and Win-Win Jobs Foundation, Korea SMEs and Startups Agency Gwangju Regional Headquarters, Gwangju Regional Industry Promotion Agency, Korea Electronics Technology Institute, Korea Automobile Research Institute, Gwangju Industry-Academia Convergence Institute, Bank of Korea Gwangju-Jeonnam Headquarters, Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) Gwangju-Jeonnam Support Office, and Korea International Trade Association Gwangju-Jeonnam Regional Headquarters.
