Bae Jeonghwan, Professor at Chonnam National University, Elected President of the Korean Society of Environmental Economics

"Raising Social Awareness of Environmental and Climate Change Issues Is Essential"

Bae Jeonghwan, Professor at Chonnam National University, Elected President of the Korean Society of Environmental Economics Jaeunghwan Bae, Professor of Economics at Chonnam National University.

Chonnam National University announced on the 11th that Professor Bae Jeonghwan of the Department of Economics (Director of the Regional Development Research Institute) was elected as the 28th President of the Korean Society of Environmental Economics at the general meeting of the Environmental Economics Society held during the '2025 Joint Conference of Economics' at Hannam University in Daejeon.


Professor Bae has served as the Senior Vice President in 2024, leading the operation of the society. He has also contributed to the development of the society by serving as the Chair of the Academic Committee, Editor-in-Chief, and Vice President, among other roles. His election as president was unanimous.


The Korean Society of Environmental Economics, established in 1990, has been at the forefront of approaching the formulation of environmental policies and the resolution of environmental issues in Korea from an economic perspective. The society is supported by the Korea Environment Institute, K-Water (Korea Water Resources Corporation), Korea Energy Economics Institute, Korea Legislation Research Institute, and the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics and Trade. It actively engages in research cooperation with institutions such as Nagasaki University and Meijo University in Japan and participates in the Asian Association of Environmental and Resource Economics.


Professor Bae stated, "Amid ongoing domestic political and economic instability, and external uncertainties such as the possibility of a second Trump administration declaring a tariff war, it is more important than ever to raise social awareness of environmental and climate change issues. I feel a tremendous sense of responsibility, as the society must play a leading role in these changing times."
