Chinese startup DeepSeek, which shocked the global tech industry by developing top-tier artificial intelligence (AI) models at relatively low costs, is now aggressively recruiting talent for artificial general intelligence (AGI) at a human-level scale.
According to Bloomberg on the 10th (local time), DeepSeek posted job openings last weekend for more than six AGI-related positions, including data experts, deep learning researchers, and chief legal officers. They are also recruiting interns with a daily wage of $70 (about 100,000 KRW), prioritizing candidates who have published papers at AI conferences or participated in open-source projects.
The hired personnel will work in Beijing and Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, where the headquarters is located.
DeepSeek has previously posted job openings on recruitment sites and offered an annual salary of 1.26 million yuan (about 250 million KRW) for AGI researchers.
Bloomberg explained, "These job postings demonstrate DeepSeek's ambition to maintain its lead in China's AI industry and compete globally."
AGI refers to AI that goes beyond the current AI, which is limited in performance to specific fields and purposes, exhibiting human-level or higher general intelligence across various domains. Companies such as OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, Google, and Anthropic are pursuing its development. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, and Masayoshi Son, chairman of SoftBank Group, have both described AGI as the 'holy grail' of the AI industry.
DeepSeek's AI model 'R1,' unveiled last month, attracted attention for being developed at a relatively low cost compared to AI models released by U.S. big tech companies that pour in astronomical amounts of funding, and for adopting an open-source approach that allows anyone to freely modify the base code.
DeepSeek is also expanding its business, recently posting job openings for a chief operating officer (COO) and chief financial officer (CFO).
