The Yeongju City Council in Gyeongbuk Province delivered a resolution urging the immediate halt of the industrial waste landfill construction plan in Dochon-ri, Bonghwa-gun, which was unanimously adopted by the council members on December 18 last year, to the Daegu Regional Environmental Office on the 10th.
On this day, Chairman Kim Byung-gi, council members, Bonghwa County council members, and representatives of the opposition committee expressed strong concerns, stating, "The industrial waste landfill will pollute the environment with leachate, harmful gases, and dust, seriously threatening the health and lives of residents in Yeongju and Bonghwa."
They also emphasized, "The project site is adjacent to the Naeseongcheon River, and it is clear that it will cause irreversible damage to local water resources and ecosystems. It is absolutely unacceptable to allow this in order to protect the environment and safeguard the living grounds of future generations," urging for the project's suspension.
Chairman Kim Byung-gi said, "The industrial waste landfill construction plan must be immediately stopped to protect the health and lives of residents and the living environment of future generations. To this end, the Yeongju City Council will strongly respond in cooperation with the executive branch, Bonghwa County, and local residents, and plans to actively communicate with relevant central government agencies."
