The Nuclear Safety and Security Commission (NSSC) has decided to establish an intergovernmental consultative body to protect nuclear power plants from new types of drone attacks.
Chairman Choi Won-ho of the NSSC announced this during the '2025 Annual Workshop on Physical Protection and Cybersecurity for Related Agencies,' held from the 11th to the 12th at the KW Convention in Seo-gu, Daejeon.
Chairman Choi stated, "This year, we will establish a protection system linked to the safety of nuclear power plants to proactively prepare for the emergence of new reactors by creating a legal basis. We will also reorganize the training evaluation system to enhance the effectiveness of drills and form and operate an intergovernmental consultative body to respond to new types of drones."
This workshop, hosted by the NSSC and organized by the Korea Institute of Nuclear Nonproliferation and Control (KINAC), is held annually. It targets operators and personnel responsible for nuclear facilities, explaining key policy directions in physical protection and cybersecurity of nuclear facilities and listening to on-site difficulties.
About 220 people attended this year's workshop, including Chairman Choi, Lee Na-young, President of KINAC, Jeon Dae-wook, Vice President of Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, Jung Chang-jin, President of KEPCO Nuclear Fuel, Lim In-cheol, Vice President of Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, and Oh Ju-ho, Director of Korea Radioactive Waste Agency.
This year, Professor Choi Sung-yeol (Department of Nuclear Engineering, Seoul National University) delivered a special lecture titled "Future Nuclear Technology, Evolving Nuclear Security Threats, and Strategic Responses," presenting a blueprint for the protection system of nuclear facilities to address future new threats.
