Three Categories: Emerging Researchers, Professional Researchers, and Designated Topics
The May 18 Memorial Foundation announced on the 11th that it will hold an open call for research papers in three categories this year: emerging researchers, professional researchers, and designated topics.
This year, the foundation has included master's and doctoral theses as eligible for support, aiming to provide practical assistance so that the next generation of scholars can conduct in-depth research on the May 18 movement.
The theme for this year's "Designated Topic Research Paper" category, which was newly established last year, is "Martial Law." The foundation plans to secure timely papers that re-examine historical experiences and analyze their current significance. The goal is to academically investigate the martial law that had a profound impact on Korean society and to explore the sustainability of democracy in modern society, sharing these insights with the public.
Researchers selected through the review process will conduct their studies over a seven-month period and receive an award after submitting their results. In addition, to highlight and disseminate the research achievements academically, an awards ceremony will be held at the "2025 May 18 International Forum."
The May 18 Institute for International Studies has set "Martial Law" as this year's main theme, providing researchers with a clear research direction and aiming to establish a long-term research ecosystem to promote a consistent international academic program.
