Chinese King and Foreign Minister to Attend Munich Security Conference... Will US-China Diplomatic Talks Take Place?

Wang Yi, the chief of China's foreign affairs command and director of the Central Foreign Affairs Office of the Chinese Communist Party (concurrently serving as Foreign Minister), will attend the Munich Security Conference (MSC) held in Germany from the 14th to the 17th. With Mark Rubio, the U.S. Secretary of State under the new Trump administration, also likely to attend, attention is focused on whether the first U.S.-China foreign ministers' meeting will take place.

On the 10th, Guo Zhaokun, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, held a briefing and announced that Director Wang will attend the MSC from the 14th to the 16th. Prior to that, he will visit the United Kingdom and Ireland starting on the 12th. After attending the MSC, he plans to host a high-level meeting in New York as the chair country of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Additionally, following the Security Council meeting, he will attend the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting held in South Africa on the 20th and 21st.

As Director Wang Yi consecutively participates in multilateral meetings, a face-to-face meeting between the U.S. and Chinese foreign ministers is expected to take place locally. The two have only communicated via phone since Secretary Rubio's inauguration on the 24th of last month. U.S. Secretary of State Rubio is highly likely to attend the MSC along with Vice President JD Vance. However, the U.S. side has announced that it will not participate in the G20 meeting.
