Daesan Port in Seosan, Chungcheongnam-do has taken a significant step toward becoming an international gateway port for the province.
On the 10th, Seosan City announced that it held a ceremony at the 4th pier of Daesan Port to mark the launch of a new container shipping route.
The event was attended by Seosan City Deputy Mayor Hong Soongwang, officials from Daesan Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries, Dongbang (stevedoring company), Hanwha TotalEnergies (shipper), Maersk (shipping company), and other corporate representatives.
The new route is a regular service departing from Daesan Port and calling at Dalian, Tianjin, Qingdao in China; Jakarta and Surabaya in Indonesia; and Davao in the Philippines.
Five container vessels, including the 'SPIL NIKEN', each with a capacity of 2,500 TEU, will operate on a rotational basis, calling at Daesan Port. These are the largest container ships ever to enter Daesan Port in Seosan.
The new route was established by Maersk, a Denmark-based company and the world’s second-largest shipping line by container capacity.
With this new route, Daesan Port in Seosan will now have seven routes operated by five companies, and the city expects last year’s container throughput of 72,723 TEU to be surpassed.
In particular, the opening of this new route will enable direct exports from Daesan Port in Seosan to Southeast Asia, and transshipment via Qingdao will facilitate exports to Europe and other long-distance destinations.
This is expected to diversify the export routes for Daesan’s petrochemical products and increase the cargo volume handled at Daesan Port in Seosan.
The city expects that increased sales for stevedoring and land transport companies, as well as enhanced service competitiveness, will make a significant contribution to the development of Daesan Port in Seosan.
To establish this new route, the city visited container shipping companies, held meetings with shipping and shipper company officials and relevant organizations, and set up an incentive system for new route establishment.
Lee Wanseop, Mayor of Seosan, stated, “The opening of this new route will serve as a catalyst for Daesan Port in Seosan to take another leap forward as an international gateway port,” adding, “We will do our utmost to provide high-quality services to customers using Daesan Port in Seosan, alongside port infrastructure development.”
