Goryeong-gun Holds Ceremony Commemorating the 106th Anniversary of the February 8 Independence Declaration

The Kim Sang-deok Memorial Association (President Jeong Seok-won) held the 106th anniversary ceremony of the February 8 Independence Declaration on the 8th at the Gayageum Hall in Daegaya Cultural Nuri, Goryeong-gun, with members, residents, and veterans' organization officials in attendance.

The February 8 Independence Declaration was a movement on February 8, 1919, when students studying in Japan during the Japanese colonial period shouted "Long live Korean independence" in the heart of Tokyo, the capital of Japan. This declaration served as a catalyst for the March 1 Movement and the establishment of the Provisional Government.

In particular, this event honored the achievements of Kim Sang-deok, an independence activist from Goryeong who led the February 8 Independence Declaration and later worked hard to rebuild the Provisional Government, and who was awarded the Order of Independence Merit. The ceremony included a lecture by the Kim Sang-deok Memorial Association (President Jeong Seok-won) on "The Establishment and Dissolution of the Special Committee for Anti-National Activities."

Lee Nam-cheol, the governor of Goryeong-gun, said, "I am grateful to join this occasion to cherish and commemorate the blood, sweat, and spirit of our patriotic ancestors on the 106th anniversary of the February 8 Independence Declaration," adding, "I hope this event will serve as a driving force to reflect on the noble will of Kim Sang-deok and promote regional unity and new development."
