One of 300 First Edition Copies Distributed to Libraries
"Misspelled Word Is One of the First Edition's Distinctive Features"
A first edition copy of the first Harry Potter series book found in a pile of waste was sold at auction for 38 million won.
On the 9th (local time), the British BBC reported that a hardcover first edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, the first book in the Harry Potter series, was sold for over ?21,000 (about 38 million won) at the 'NLB Auctions' held in Paynton the previous day.
The title of the first Harry Potter book is 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone,' but it was changed to 'Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone' when published in the United States.
The first edition of 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone' was published in 1997. At that time, only 500 hardcover copies were printed.
Daniel Pierce, who operates the auction house, stated that he found this book among the belongings of a recently deceased man in the Briksham area of the UK, and that the book was in a pile of waste about to be discarded when discovered. Pierce explained, "The book auctioned this time is one of the 300 copies distributed to libraries out of the 500 first edition copies, and it is a really good price for a first edition hardcover sale."
He added that one of the characteristics of the first edition is the misspelling of the word 'Philosopher' printed on the back of the book, which helped confirm that this book is a first edition.
