Lee Cheol-woo, Governor of Gyeongbuk, "Nation Shaken, People Take to Streets... President Must Be Released Quickly"

Expresses Position via Facebook
Participates in Rally at Dongdaegu Station Square

Gyeongbuk Governor Lee Cheol-woo urged on the 8th, "The people can no longer endure and have taken to the streets. The judiciary must promptly release the president."

Through Facebook on the same day, Governor Lee said, "The cheers of the people echoing in Dongdaegu Station Square are vivid in my ears. When I went to the site, the tens of thousands filling the square were not unusual people but ordinary neighbors of all ages. Despite the bitter cold of minus 10 degrees, families holding hands and everyone coming out to the streets shared one heart: concern and love for the Republic of Korea."

He continued, "The Democratic Party, which controls the National Assembly, is intimidating and pressuring the entire country. The Corruption Investigation Office has ignored laws and procedures and indiscriminately arrested the sitting president as if he were a petty criminal. The Constitutional Court is sprinting through this critical impeachment trial as if it has a predetermined goal, like a 100-meter dash. As even the rule of law becomes useless and the entire country is shaken, the people can no longer endure and have taken to the streets themselves. The judiciary must promptly release the president as demanded by the people," he raised his voice.

Governor Lee said, "Our people have risen resolutely to protect freedom in times of national crisis, and Daegu-Gyeongbuk has been at the center. The most independence fighters resisted to regain freedom from Japanese colonial rule, and thousands of young student soldiers sacrificed their lives in the battles of Dabudong and Jangsari to defend freedom and democracy against the North Korean communist invasion. Even in the desperate crisis when the conservative wing was broken by President Park Geun-hye’s impeachment, the spark was barely ignited from Seomun Market to restore the country’s balance. The tens of thousands of cheers erupting today at Dongdaegu Station Square will also be recorded in history as overcoming national crises," he added.

He emphasized, "The country the people desire is not a humiliating one that hands out 250,000 won and tames its citizens, but a country that gives pride so that people can be recognized and live well according to their efforts. It is a courageous country that, instead of obstructing and mocking challenges in resource development, built highways, steel mills, and scientific research institutes despite difficulties and pioneered the future. It is a strong and wise country that protects its people from threats and can take historic steps toward reconciliation and unification for national interests, not one that submits to foreign powers or incites to take up bamboo spears. It is not a backward country that impeaches presidents at every turn but an advanced nation where the president, political circles, and the people unite for stability and prosperity."

Governor Lee concluded, "Although I could not speak my heart on the podium in the square today due to election laws, I express my gratitude and respect to everyone who sang the national anthem with all their might. I will never forget the moment we sang the national anthem together so that Daegu-Gyeongbuk and the Republic of Korea resounded loudly. As in history, our people will surely protect freedom and democracy this time as well," and added, "Free Republic of Korea, we will stand together to protect this country we love so much until the end. May God bless the Republic of Korea! Long live Korea!"
