With plans underway to establish a medical waste incineration facility near the Daeyang Industrial Complex in Mokpo, Jeonnam, Kim Won-i, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea representing Mokpo, Jeonnam, has made his opposition clear. He stated that he cannot agree to the establishment of a medical waste incineration facility due to reasons such as protecting residents' health rights and safeguarding the environment.

On the 7th, Kim visited the Yeongsangang River Basin Environmental Office in Gwangju to convey citizens' concerns and his opposition regarding the installation of the medical waste incineration facility.

Kim explained, "After the application for the medical waste incineration facility was submitted last November, Mokpo city council members from the Democratic Party of Korea issued a statement opposing it on the 22nd of last month. By visiting the Yeongsangang River Basin Environmental Office, I directly conveyed citizens' concerns and am continuing active efforts to prevent the facility from being established."

He also expressed his views on the current regulation that does not require gathering residents' opinions when promoting incineration facilities with a capacity of less than 100 tons.

Kim stated, "Facilities with a capacity of less than 100 tons should not be recklessly installed in densely populated areas simply because the regulations do not require collecting residents' opinions, especially since these facilities can cause air pollution. If a facility that incinerates both general and hazardous or isolated medical waste is established in Mokpo, where the site is small and a large residential complex is located nearby, it could seriously harm the health of local residents," he expressed his concerns.

He further warned, "Although only 4 tons of medical waste are generated daily in Mokpo, the planned facility has a processing capacity of 48 tons, making it highly likely that large amounts of medical waste from Gwangju and Jeonnam will be brought in. We must prevent Mokpo from becoming a collection site for medical waste from other regions."
