A research team at Yonsei University has successfully developed a new topical antibiotic delivery patch (periodontitis patch) for the treatment of periodontitis.

Yonsei University and Juvic Develop Patch-Type Periodontitis Treatment Applying Microneedle Technology Provided by Yonsei University

According to Yonsei University on the 7th, the research team led by Jeong Hyeong-il from the Department of Biotechnology at Yonsei University and the research team of Professor Jeong E-won from the Department of Periodontology at the Dental College developed a patch-type therapeutic agent applying soluble microneedle technology loaded with topical antibiotics, proposing a new local drug delivery method that can maximize the treatment effect of periodontitis. This study was conducted in collaboration with Juvic, a microneedle technology company.

The periodontitis patch developed by the joint research team was designed to complement the shortcomings of existing topical ointments and injection treatments. The research team applied a light-blocking manufacturing process to prevent the photodegradation of minocycline, successfully maintaining drug stability up to 94.4%.

Existing injection treatments have significant pain and poor ease of use, while ointment treatments have low drug delivery efficiency due to being easily washed away from the mucous membrane.

Professor Jeong said, "Existing periodontitis treatments cause great discomfort to patients and have limited therapeutic effects. The newly developed periodontitis patch enables non-invasive and efficient drug delivery, becoming a new alternative for periodontitis treatment."

Jang Hwi-seok, CEO of Juvic, emphasized, "Juvic continuously develops innovative products in various fields such as vaccines, skin treatments, and hair loss treatments by utilizing microneedle technology. Through the periodontitis patch, we will lead the periodontitis treatment market and plan to apply it to the treatment of various oral diseases in the future."
