Cold Snap Expected on Tomorrow's Commute
On the afternoon of the 6th, heavy snowfall is pouring down in the Seoul metropolitan area, and the snow will continue until Friday, the 7th.
Around 2 p.m. that day, heavy snow began along the west coast and spread to the Seoul metropolitan area and Chungnam in the afternoon. The snow is caused by a pressure trough formed as relatively warm westerly winds blowing from a high-pressure system near Shanghai, China, collide with the cold air over Korea.
Except for the eastern coast of Gangwon, the central region including the Seoul metropolitan area will experience snowfall until the morning of the 7th (Chungcheong until noon), Honam and Jeju from that night, and some inland areas of Gyeongbuk and western inland Gyeongnam from dawn to morning on the 7th, with snowfall rates of 1 to 3 cm per hour at times.
In particular, the Seoul metropolitan area is expected to see heavy snowfall of 3 to 5 cm per hour locally for short periods until the evening of the 6th and between dawn and morning on the 7th. Chungcheong and Honam will experience this from the night of the 6th until the afternoon of the 7th (western Jeolla until the 8th), and the southern inland and mountainous areas of Gangwon will see it between dawn and morning on the 7th.
The additional snowfall expected until the 7th is 5 to 20 cm in Jeju mountains, Jeonbuk, Gwangju, and Jeonnam (excluding the eastern southern coast), with up to 25 cm or more in the western coast and southern inland of Jeonbuk; 5 to 15 cm in Chungcheong and mid-mountain areas of Jeju (up to 20 cm or more in Chungnam and Chungbuk); 5 to 10 cm on Ulleungdo and Dokdo (up to 15 cm or more),
Nationwide, the lowest temperatures on the morning of the 7th will range between -15°C and 0°C. Expected minimum and maximum temperatures in major cities are Seoul and Incheon at -12°C and -6°C, Daejeon at -7°C and -4°C, Gwangju at -3°C and -2°C, Daegu at -4°C and -2°C, Ulsan at -3°C and 1°C, and Busan at -1°C and 3°C.
In the East Sea offshore waters, where a strong wind and high wave warning has been issued, strong winds of 30 to 70 km/h (9 to 16 m/s) and high waves of 1.5 to 4.0 meters are expected to continue for the time being. Wave heights in the outer central East Sea and northern outer southern East Sea will exceed 5 meters at their highest.
From dawn on the 7th, rough seas will return to other seas besides the East Sea offshore waters, and especially in the West Sea offshore waters, South Sea offshore waters, and Jeju waters, waves are expected to rise above 5 meters from the afternoon of the 7th, possibly prompting the issuance of a storm warning.
