Gwangju City is strengthening its support for job-seeking activities among unemployed youth. As the prolonged economic downturn continues to freeze the job market, the city is expanding job search allowances and diversifying programs to ensure that young job seekers do not lose motivation.

According to Gwangju City on the 6th, the city is enhancing the “Gwangju Youth Job Search Allowance Support Project,” which provides financial assistance for job-seeking activities and a variety of competency-building programs for local unemployed youth.

First, the job search allowance, which last year provided 2.5 million won per person over five months at 500,000 won per month, will be increased this year to 3 million won over six months. The support period has been extended by one month.

To encourage stable employment among young job seekers, the city will provide a 500,000 won employment or startup success incentive to those who secure a job or successfully start a business during the program. However, the total support per person, including both the job search allowance and the success incentive, cannot exceed 3 million won.

The competency-building programs are also being diversified. To enhance competitiveness in the job market, newly designed programs such as career and job preparation, competency enhancement, and company exploration types will be offered to assist with career planning and job search strategies.

Along with the expansion of the job search support project, the city has changed the recruitment method from the previous biannual system to a unified recruitment in February. The program is open to 1,500 unemployed youth aged 19 to 39 who reside in Gwangju, and the application period is from the 10th to the 28th. Applications can be submitted through the Gwangju Youth Integrated Platform website.

The selection results will be announced in March and can be checked on the “My Page” section of the Gwangju Youth Integrated Platform website or via individual text messages. If the number of selected applicants falls short, an additional recruitment notice will be issued, with supplementary recruitment scheduled for April.

Final selected participants must complete online preliminary training and follow the procedures to receive a “Clean Card” for the job search allowance. The job search allowance will be distributed starting in April, and the competency-building programs will run from April to October.

Kwon Yunsook, Director of Youth Policy, said, “We hope that the youth job search allowance will go beyond simply providing financial support and will offer practical help to young people in finding employment through customized job-seeking support.”

Meanwhile, since launching the youth job search allowance support project in 2018, Gwangju City has provided 17.4 billion won to more than 7,600 young people.
