Cultural Experiences Including Writing Wish Notes and Making LED Jwibulnori
Jinan County, North Jeolla Province, announced on the 6th that it will hold the Jeongwol Daeboreum Festival on the 8th from 5 PM to 8 PM in the area of Jinan Highland Chili Market.
The 'Mangwol-iya' Jeongwol Daeboreum Festival, organized by the Jinan Jungpyeonggut Preservation Association (President Lee Seungcheol), will begin with a Dangsan Gut ritual held under the Dangsan tree in Gunhari, Jinan-eup, on the morning of the event.
Afterwards, lively pungmul performances such as Saemgut and Gagahoho Madangbalgi, which are traditional rituals to ward off misfortune, will take place throughout Jinan-eup.
The Jeolla Left Province Jinan Jungpyeonggut Preservation Association was designated as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of North Jeolla Province in 2020 for 'Jinan Jungpyeong Nongak' (category), continuing its tradition.
'Daeboreum,' celebrated on the 15th day of the lunar calendar's first month, has long been one of the most important seasonal customs in Korea's agrarian society. People have enjoyed customs such as Dalmaji (moon viewing), wishing for a good harvest and blessings, cracking bureom nuts, selling the heat, and drinking ear-clearing wine.
It is also a day when traditional folk games such as Jwibulnori (fire-spinning), Jegichagi (kicking shuttlecock), and Neolttwigi (seesaw jumping) are enjoyed together.
Accordingly, at the event venue on the 8th, a variety of cultural experiences will be offered as pre-events, including writing wish notes, making LED Jwibulnori, making Jegichagi, and other seasonal folk games.
Participants will also share traditional Daeboreum foods such as Ogokbap (five-grain rice) and namul (seasoned vegetables), and the Jungpyeonggut Preservation Association will provide bureom pouches on a first-come, first-served basis to festival attendees.
In particular, when the full moon rises, a bonfire will be lit in the daljip (moon house), and people will circle around it. The Jungpyeonggut Preservation Association will perform exorcism rituals and Jeongwol Daeboreum gut performances to drive away bad luck for the year.
A county official said, "We hope everyone will burn away last year's misfortune and boils in the daljip and make wishes for a new beginning and hope. We wish for a bright and radiant Eulsan year, just like the full moon of Daeboreum."
