Following the fire incident involving an Air Busan passenger plane at Gimhae International Airport on the 28th of last month, which is presumed to have started from an auxiliary battery, airlines are rushing to strengthen management measures for small electronic devices.

According to Jeju Air, passengers must confirm and agree during mobile and kiosk check-in that they will personally carry lithium batteries such as auxiliary batteries and keep them in visible places, prohibiting storage in overhead compartments. Under Jeju Air regulations, auxiliary batteries with 100 watt-hours (Wh) or less or 2 grams or less are limited to 5 per person, and lithium battery-equipped electronic devices such as laptops and cameras are limited to 15 per person. Devices and auxiliary batteries with batteries exceeding 100Wh but not exceeding 160Wh, or weighing more than 2g but not exceeding 8g, are allowed up to 2 per person. Batteries exceeding 160Wh or 8g are not permitted to be carried.

Jeju Air is conducting announcements at boarding gates in four languages: Korean, English, Japanese, and Chinese, to inform passengers of the strengthened regulations. The enhanced regulations are also added to the website, mobile boarding passes, and domestic paper boarding passes for guidance. Inside the cabin, flight attendants conduct two announcements instructing passengers to personally carry auxiliary batteries and other lithium batteries and to immediately notify the crew if overheating occurs.
