Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Announces on X
Trump Says "The Call Went Very Well"
U.S. President Donald Trump decided on the 4th (local time) to delay the implementation of the 25% tariff on Canada for one month, just one day before it was set to take effect. While President Trump declared this tariff measure as a "war on drugs," Canada promised to establish a 'Fentanyl Czar' and designate drug trafficking organizations as terrorists to prevent the influx of drugs into the United States.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on the 3rd via social media platform X (formerly Twitter), "I just had a good call with President Trump," adding, "The scheduled tariffs will be postponed for at least 30 days while we cooperate."
He also announced a $1.3 billion border plan implementation policy.
Prime Minister Trudeau stated, "We will strengthen the border with new helicopters, technology, and personnel, and closely cooperate with our U.S. partners," adding, "We have also expanded resources to block the influx of fentanyl." He emphasized, "About 10,000 personnel are working on the front lines to protect the border and will continue to do so."
He also revealed plans to establish a Fentanyl Czar and designate drug trafficking organizations as terrorists.
Trudeau said, "We will launch a joint mobile strike force between the U.S. and Canada to monitor the border 24/7 and combat organized crime, fentanyl, and money laundering," adding, "I have signed new directives regarding organized crime and fentanyl." He explained, "We will provide $200 million in support for this."
President Trump also stated at 3 p.m. that his call with Prime Minister Trudeau "went very well." He made this remark during a brief conversation with a CNN reporter at the White House. When asked about the enforcement of the 25% tariff on Canada scheduled for midnight on the 4th, he replied, "Wait and see."
With this, President Trump decided to delay the tariff measures on both Mexico and Canada for one month.
Earlier that day, he announced the tariff delay on Mexico through his social media platform Truth Social. President Trump said, "President Claudia Sheinbaum has agreed to immediately deploy 10,000 soldiers to the border dividing Mexico and the United States," adding, "These soldiers will be specially designated to prevent fentanyl and illegal immigrants from entering our country." He continued, "We have additionally agreed to immediately suspend the anticipated tariffs for one month," and said, "I look forward to participating in negotiations with President Sheinbaum to finalize the trade between the two countries."
