U.S.-Japan Summit Scheduled for the 7th
Leaders Expected to Discuss Semiconductor Issues
Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said on the 3rd that he will "thoroughly investigate the background of the decision made by U.S. President Donald Trump to impose tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China, whether it aligns with the national interests of the United States, and what impact it will have on global free trade in the future."
NHK, the public broadcaster, reported that Prime Minister Ishiba made these remarks in response to a related question from Katsuya Okada, former secretary-general of the main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party, during the House of Representatives Budget Committee on the same day.
Regarding President Trump's declaration to withdraw from the Paris Agreement on climate change after taking office, Ishiba said, "We must analyze how the United States will proceed from now on," adding, "As for our country (Japan), we will continue to demand appropriate U.S. involvement to curb global warming."
Ishiba stated, "We share the concept of a free and open Indo-Pacific and the rule of law with the United States," and said he will reaffirm this at the upcoming U.S.-Japan summit to be held in Washington, D.C. on the 7th. Ishiba is scheduled to visit the United States from the 6th to the 8th and hold his first U.S.-Japan summit with President Trump.
The U.S.-Japan summit is expected to include discussions related to semiconductors. Ishiba said, "I am well aware that President Trump has a very strong awareness regarding semiconductors," and added, "I want to share the importance of U.S.-Japan cooperation on semiconductors."
