Gwangju and Jeonnam Industrial Output: Manufacturing Up, Consumption and Construction Down

Honam Regional Statistics Office Releases Industrial Activity Trends for December 2024

In December of last year, the Gwangju and Jeonnam regions showed a recovery in industrial production, rebounding from previous declines, but performance in consumption and construction remained sluggish.


According to the "Industrial Activity Trends in Gwangju and Jeonnam for December 2024" released by the Honam Regional Statistics Office on the 3rd, Gwangju's manufacturing production increased by 17.0% compared to the same month of the previous year.

Manufacturing production decreased in printing and recorded media (-31.3%), food products (-1.3%), and Naju products (-14.7%), but increased in tobacco (101.6%), electrical equipment (36.1%), and automobiles (6.8%) compared to the previous year.


The sales index for large retail stores was 104.7, down 8.8% from the previous year. Department stores decreased by 6.4%, and large supermarkets by 12.3%. By product category, consumption of leisure, hobby, and sporting goods, as well as other products, increased, while sales of shoes and bags, cosmetics, food and beverages, home appliances, and clothing decreased.


The amount of construction orders was 374.8 billion KRW, a decrease of 46.7% compared to the same month last year. By ordering party, the public sector decreased by 87.6%, while the private sector increased by 958.8%.

In December, manufacturing production in Jeonnam increased by 8.8% compared to the same month of the previous year.


Manufacturing production increased in electricity and gas (35.9%), other transportation equipment (86.3%), and chemical products (5.5%), while it decreased in primary metals (-4.1%), machinery and equipment (-32.4%), and petroleum refining (-2.2%) compared to the previous year.


Sales at large retail stores were 84.2, down 17.2% from the previous year. By product category, all items including shoes and bags, clothing, cosmetics, home appliances, and food and beverages decreased.


The amount of construction orders was 618.1 billion KRW, a decrease of 43.6% compared to the same month last year. By ordering party, both the public and private sectors decreased by 38.2% and 50.4%, respectively.
