Active in Theater and Dramas Since 1965
Actress Lee Ju-sil, who appeared as Detective Hwang Jun-ho's (Wi Ha-joon) mother in the Netflix series "Squid Game" Season 2, has passed away at the age of 81.
According to her agency, 123 Culture, Lee was diagnosed with stomach cancer about three months ago. On the day of her passing, she experienced cardiac arrest and was transferred to the Catholic University Uijeongbu St. Mary's Hospital, where she passed away.
She debuted as a theater actress in 1965 and appeared in various works such as "Death of a Salesman" and "Macbeth." In 1993, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and struggled between life and death but was declared cured after more than ten years through chemotherapy.
While battling illness, she earned a Ph.D. in Public Health from Wonkwang University. After her recovery, she actively worked in dramas and films. Her notable works include the dramas "The Uncanny Counter" and "Let Me Hear Your Song," and the films "Mother and Son Walk" and "Hommage." Her final work was "Squid Game" Season 2.
The funeral is being held at Severance Hospital Funeral Hall in Sinchon, Seoul, with the funeral procession scheduled for the 5th.
