China Ministry of Commerce on US Tariffs: "WTO Complaint and Corresponding Measures"

China Ministry of Commerce on US Tariffs: "WTO Complaint and Corresponding Measures"

On the 1st (local time), U.S. President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China, prompting China to immediately announce that it would respond with "corresponding measures."

A spokesperson for China's Ministry of Commerce stated in a statement released on its website on the 2nd, "The U.S. White House declared an additional 10% tariff on Chinese exports to the U.S., citing issues such as fentanyl," adding, "China expresses strong dissatisfaction and firmly opposes this."

The spokesperson criticized, "The U.S.'s unilateral additional tariffs seriously violate World Trade Organization (WTO) rules," and said, "This is not only unhelpful in resolving its own problems but also destroys normal economic and trade cooperation between China and the U.S."

They continued, "China will file a complaint with the WTO regarding the U.S.'s wrongful actions and will take corresponding countermeasures to firmly safeguard its rights and interests."

The spokesperson added, "China hopes that the U.S. will objectively and rationally view and handle its issues such as fentanyl, and not threaten other countries with tariffs at every turn," and further urged, "China calls on the U.S. to correct its wrongful actions, face China directly, confront issues on the basis of equality, mutual benefit, and mutual respect, engage in honest dialogue, strengthen cooperation, and manage differences."
