A woman in her 20s was sentenced to a suspended prison term after leaving her young children unattended in a home mixed with a large amount of garbage and pet dog feces, and failing to take them to the hospital despite skin rashes on the children.
According to Yonhap News on the 1st, the Chuncheon District Court Wonju Branch Criminal Division 1 (Judge Kang Myeongjung) sentenced A (28), who was indicted on charges of violating the Child Welfare Act (child abandonment and neglect) and the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection, to 10 months in prison with a 2-year suspension. The court also ordered A to undergo probation, 80 hours of community service, and 40 hours of child abuse recidivism prevention education.
A was brought to trial in May last year on charges of neglect for failing to properly provide basic care, protection, and treatment including food, clothing, and shelter to her 4-year-old and 1-year-old sons while living in an apartment in Taebaek-si, Gangwon Province from mid-May to June 6, 2023. A left food waste, household garbage, and pet dog feces inside the home without cleaning, leaving the children in a severely unsanitary environment filled with foul odors.
It was also revealed that despite the feces being hardened in the diaper worn by the 4-year-old son, A did not change the diaper, and did not take the 1-year-old son to the hospital for treatment despite skin rashes on his forehead.
Furthermore, the indictment added charges that on January 28 of last year, A accessed B’s Google account twice without authorization after learning the password from a computer used by victim B, and on February 3 at around 11:30 p.m., publicly defamed B by falsely claiming that B led a sexually promiscuous lifestyle, damaging the victim’s reputation.
The court pointed out, "The defendant left her two young children in a poor environment and used the victim B’s ID to unlawfully access the information and communications network, posting defamatory content, which shows a very serious nature of the crime." The court continued, "Although the defendant has a prior record of defamation using information and communications networks and showed an uncooperative attitude by failing to appear at the trial without notice, the sentence was determined considering that she confessed to the crime and promised to take good care of her young children with her family."
