Yangjaedaero 91-gil Pedestrian-Priority Road Project Completed
Selected for Seoul City Public Contest, Securing 350 Million KRW in Funding
Gangdong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Soo-hee) announced on the 31st that it has completed the pedestrian-priority road construction project on Yangjaedaero 91-gil and is actively promoting projects for resident safety by securing budgets for new target sites.

Pedestrian-priority roads are an institutional means to create a pedestrian-friendly environment within residential areas. In narrow roads where sidewalks and roadways cannot be separated due to road conditions, these roads help induce caution and consideration from vehicle drivers, reducing the likelihood of traffic accidents.
Yangjaedaero 91-gil in Gangdong-gu is a route heavily used by students commuting to Seongil Elementary School and Seongnae Middle School, as well as residents accessing Dunchon-dong Station and Dunchon Traditional Market, making the establishment of pedestrian safety facilities essential.
To this end, the district submitted the "Yangjaedaero 91-gil Pedestrian-Priority Road Construction Project" to the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s public contest, securing project funds as the top-priority project among Seoul’s autonomous districts, and completed construction at the end of last year.
With this project, Yangjaedaero 91-gil has been revitalized. The design harmonizes with surrounding shops, and stamped pavement with grooves and paint has been applied to prevent slipping and encourage slow driving. Traffic safety signs and road markings clearly indicate to both pedestrians and drivers that this is a pedestrian-priority road.
Additionally, at intersections of narrow roads, geometric pattern design pavement, stop lines, and intersection markings have been installed to improve both aesthetics and safety.
In Gangdong-gu, nine sections (total length 3.06 km), including Yangjaedaero 91-gil, have been designated as pedestrian-priority roads. This year, the district applied for the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s pedestrian environment improvement project for the “Yangjaedaero 124-gil Pedestrian-Priority Road New Construction Project,” a school route for Sinmyeong Elementary School, and the “Amsa-gil Pedestrian-Priority Road Maintenance Project” in the child protection zone of the Boramnamu Public Daycare Center. Both projects were selected as top-priority, securing a budget of 350 million KRW, and are being promoted with the goal of completion within the year.
Jung Young-hwan, head of the Gangdong-gu Traffic Administration Division, said, “We are creating streets where residents, including children, can safely commute by establishing pedestrian-priority roads mainly in areas with heavy pedestrian traffic such as elementary school routes. We will continue to promote projects to create pedestrian-friendly spaces, including pedestrian-priority roads, so that drivers carefully consider pedestrians and pedestrians can move safely.”
