Playwright Yoon Dae-sung, famous for dramas such as 'Chief Inspector' and 'Three Families Under One Roof,' passed away on the 27th due to old age. He was 86 years old.
He was born near Mudanjiang, Manchuria in 1939, graduated from Yonsei University with a degree in law, and completed the Drama Center Theater Academy in 1964. He debuted in 1967 when his play 'Departure' won the Dong-A Ilbo New Spring Literary Contest.
He left behind many works with strong social themes or reflecting changes in modern society. His works include 'The History of Mad Animals,' 'Voice,' 'Praise of Death,' 'The Sky of Namsadang,' and 'If I Could Love Just One More Time.'
From 1973 to 1980, he worked as an exclusive writer for MBC and as a film scenario writer, writing dramas such as 'Chief Inspector,' 'Thrifty Family,' and 'Three Families Under One Roof,' as well as films like 'Wandering Stars,' 'They Are Like Us,' and 'Falling Has Wings.'
From 1980 to 2004, he taught students at Seoul Institute of the Arts, and in 2011, he became a member of the Theater Division of the National Academy of Arts of Korea.
In 2015, the Yoon Dae-sung Drama Literature Museum, the first literary museum for playwrights in Korea, opened in the Yeongeuk Village in Miryang, Gyeongnam. In the same year, the 'Yoon Dae-sung Playwriting Award' was established to discover unpublished creative plays and nurture new writers.
He authored books such as 'Yoon Dae-sung Play Collection,' 'The Sky of Namsadang,' 'The Practice of Playwriting,' 'Hello, You,' 'Complete Works of Yoon Dae-sung,' and the autobiographical novel 'Confession.'
He received awards including the Dong-A Theater Award, Korean Film Arts Award, Contemporary Literature Award, Korea Theater Festival Playwriting Award, Dongrang Yoo Chi-jin Theater Award, the National Medal, and the Presidential Citation.
The funeral hall is set up at Seoul National University Hospital Funeral Hall. The funeral procession will be held at 8:30 a.m. on the 29th.
