Chonnam National University announced on the 24th that the 'Future Education Hall', which was previously used as the ROTC headquarters, has been registered as Gwangju City's Excellent Architectural Asset No. 2.
The 'Future Education Hall' is the oldest existing building on the Yongbong-dong campus of Chonnam National University. It was registered as an architectural asset of Gwangju City in recognition of its historical and cultural value as well as its unique architectural beauty.
This building was completed in 1955 and was temporarily used as the main building of the College of Engineering. In 1957, when the first building of the College of Engineering was completed, the main building function was relocated. Since the establishment of the ROTC in 1961, it is known that the building began to be used by the ROTC.
In 2018, as part of Chonnam National University's Minjugil Project, a new building for educational and multipurpose use was constructed on the ROTC site, and the ROTC facilities were relocated. The existing building then began to explore new ways of utilization.
In 2020, the building's name was changed from 'ROTC Headquarters' to 'Future Education Hall', and after interior remodeling in 2021, it is now used as the 'Gwangju-Jeonnam Regional Innovation Platform University Education Innovation Headquarters'.
The Future Education Hall, now registered as an excellent architectural asset, is an important legacy that has accompanied the long history of Chonnam National University. With this registration, a portion of the maintenance costs, including internal and external repairs, will be supported in accordance with the 'Gwangju City Ordinance on the Promotion of Hanok and Other Architectural Assets'.
Kim Jaeyoon, Director of Planning and Coordination at Chonnam National University, stated, "The registration of the Future Education Hall as an excellent architectural asset of Gwangju City is a meaningful recognition of the historical value of our university's architecture," and added, "We will take this opportunity to preserve the historical value of the building and further strengthen our connection with the local community."
